In a major development, Maharashtra Home Minister (HM) Anil Deshmukh tendered his resignation after Mumbai High Court (HC) approved CBI investigation into allegations by former Mumbai Commissioner Parambir Singh against Deshmukh.

Tendering his resignation, Deshmukh addressed the same to CM Uddhav Thackeray and said that following the preliminary CBI probe ordered by the Mumbai HC today 5 March, on the basis of Advocate Jayshri Patil’s petition, he was accepting moral responsibility and tendering his resignation.
In his letter, Deshmukh says that it is morally unacceptable for him to continue as Home Minister of the state while CBI conducts an investigation. He has asked the Chief Minister to relieve him of his duties while stating that he has voluntarily decided to stay away from the post.
It must be mentioned that this resignation comes hours after the HC passed an order asking the CBI to conduct a preliminary probe into the corruption allegations against Deshmukh and conclude the probe within 15 days.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of Mumbai HC Dipankar Datta had issued orders to the CBI to conduct a preliminary investigation within 15 days. In its order, the court had stated that CBI need not register an FIR (First Information report) immediately since the state government had already set up a high-level committee to look into the issue. The further course of action after the completion of the preliminary investigation was to be taken as per the CBI director’s discretion said the order.
Former Mumbai Police chief Param Bir Singh had alleged that Anil Deshmukh had asked tainted cop Sachin Vaze to ‘collect’ Rs 100 crores per month from dance bars and restaurants in Mumbai.
Even though this is a welcome move, it must be noted that Deshmukh is just a political lightweight and this resignation shouldn’t be seen as an excuse to bury the Ambani bomb threat and extortion issue.
