The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government is preparing to change the names of many cities and places in Madhya Pradesh which includes Bhopal and Minto Hall as well. Minto Hall, named after the British colonial Viceroy Minto, has been used as the assembly building for a long time and now the Madhya Pradesh government has begun the groundwork to change its name.
It has been the long-standing demand of residents and public representatives that the names be changed. Along with this, demand has also been raised to change the name of Habibganj railway station in Bhopal. Some time ago, Rameshwar Sharma, the Speaker of the Assembly, had demanded the name of Idgah Hills of Bhopal be changed to Gurunanak Tekri. Earlier, the Municipal Corporation Council had passed a proposal to change the name of Bhopal city to Bhojpal which is currently pending at the government level.
Changes in the names of cities in Madhya Pradesh have begun with Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) and Bherunda (Nasrallaganj). In continuation of this, the state government is preparing to change the names of a dozen cities and places including the capital Bhopal, Minto Hall, Idgah Hills, Aubedullaganj, Garatganj, Begumganj, and Gauharganj in Raisen district, Burhanpur city, and Sultanpur among others.
BJP MP from Bhopal, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has demanded that names of Islamnagar, Lalghati, Halali Dam, and Halalpura Bus Stand in Bhopal also be changed. Former Chief Minister Uma Bharti has also demanded a change of the names of these places. Both BJP leaders say that all these names were given during the Muslim rule.
Sadhvi Pragya had said that during their times, Muslim rulers had made Lalghati red with blood. Similarly, Islamnagar was formerly Ishwar Nagar. Therefore, the names of all these places will be changed and they’ll henceforth be named after revolutionary heroes. Uma Bharti had also reiterated this point and said that the names of Lalghati and Halali Dam remind us of the cruelty of the Mughals and hence they need to be changed.
To change the name of a place, a proposal is first put forward by local residents and public representatives. The local body then forwards the proposal to the government and after cabinet approval, it is sent to the Governor. Once the Governor approves the proposal, the Home department issues notification regarding the change of name.
