UP: Village chief writes to CM asking cancellation of SC-ST benefits to converts

Converts have been drawing benefits meant for reserved and backward Hindu communities even if they aren’t eligible for the same. The village headman of Karmishirpur in UP’s Jalalpur has written to CM Yogi Adityanath asking for the withdrawal of ST-SC reservation benefits to those who have converted out of Hindu Dharma.

As per available information, the chief Ashok Yadav has forwarded a plea to both the CM and District Magistrate (DM) requesting both cancellations of benefits and ensuring that no such benefits are rewarded to converts henceforth. Additionally, a former panchayat member has also put forward an appeal asking for an investigation into cases where converts have been granted such benefits.

It has further come to light that Christian missionaries are active in the Jalalpur district and evangelicals conduct Sunday camps to lure people to convert to Christianity. More than 300 families have been converted by evangelicals in the last three years. Karmishirpur, Allipur Kodra, Kalepur, Thatta, and Itauri among others have been largely affected by the conversion activities of Christian evangelicals.

What is, however, shocking is that the converts continue to remain Hindus on paper thereby drawing reservation benefits meant for socially backward Hindu classes. Ashok Yadav and other citizens have raised objections in this regard and stated that converts shouldn’t be allowed to take advantage as they are no longer Hindus.

Yadav says in his letter that Purnamasi, Sandip, Sheela, Mansharam, Rajbahadur, Rambodh, and a dozen others from his village have converted to Christianity a long time ago. He has demanded that their caste certificates be cancelled.

Similarly, BJP leader and former District Panchayat member Arvind Pandey has also sent a letter to the CM mentioning Ravi Kumar of Allipur Kodra, Kamlesh of Kalepur Mahuwal, Madhav of Sairpur Umran, Ram Vilas, and Pannelal of Madhavpur and demanded cancellation of their caste certificate citing their conversion.

It must be mentioned here that converts to any religion from Hindu Dharma with the exception of Buddhism would automatically lose their Scheduled Castes and Tribes status as well as the accompanying benefits as per the provisions of the constitution. In view of this, if the government takes cognizance of the appeals and takes action on the basis of the pleas, then the converts are sure to lose the benefits they have been receiving illegally so far.
