DMK ally MP Thol Thirumavalavan is a Christian holding a Hindu SC certificate? LRPF files complaint and seeks disqualification

Legal advocacy organisation Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) has filed a complaint with the concerned authorities about Thol. Thirumavalavan, Lok Sabha MP from Chidambaram constituency in Tamil Nadu, accusing him of misusing reservation benefits. It has come to light that Thirumavalavan is a Christian holding a Hindu SC certificate in order to illegally benefit from reservation, LRPF has claimed.

Thirumavalavan, the chief of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Party (formerly known as Dalit Panthers of India), contested from Chidambaram, a reserved constituency and won in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In an interview to Thanthi TV, Thirumavalavan can be heard saying that he belongs to Christianity and that he often attends Christian events. In another event that appears to be his party meeting, he promoted Christianity by saying “Christian conversion continues to this day weakening the Hindu community and Hindu religion. People (Dalits and Vanvasis) move towards ‘Yesappa’ (Jesus) everyday on their own.”

He further says, “Many sitting here believe in Yesappa. When huts were put on fire, (they were) attacked and murdered, neither Shiva nor Vishnu or Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar protected them, so what is wrong in moving towards Yesappa?”. In one of his campaigns during the recent assembly elections in TN, he frankly admitted that his sister was a Christian and used to go to church. But he also claimed that he didn’t know that his sister had converted to Christianity until her death. Earlier, when his sister died there were reports that she was buried as per Christian customs in their native place, violating Covid protocols.

Citing these anomalies, LRPF has written a letter to the collector of Cuddalore district, Chief Secretary of TN and the Lok Sabha speaker seeking to disqualify Thirumavalavan as he misused reservation benefits by contesting from a reserved constituency. LRPF wrote in its letter that “Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 provides that no person who professes a religion different from the Hindu, the Sikh or the Buddhist shall be deemed to be a member of a Scheduled Caste. Thus a person professing Christian religion cannot claim Scheduled Caste status.”

It also cited the verdict passed by the Supreme Court, Civil Appeal No.4870 of 2015 dated 29 April 2016, that said “persons who belong to SC will loose the SC status if they convert their religion to Christianity and Islam. It clearly appears that Shri Thirumavalavan is still holding SC Caste Certificate which is against the Constitutional (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950.”

Thirumavalavan has, on multiple occasions, abused Hindu beliefs and even called for famous temples such as Chidambaram Nataraja, Madurai Meenakshi and Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temples to be demolished. He also described temples as ‘buildings that have vulgar dolls’ while he described churches as the ones with ‘high beautiful towers’. He in fact organised a conference with the current CM of TN, MK. Stalin as one of the chief guests, titled ‘Uproot Sanatana Dharma‘.

Thirumavalavan has the habit of attributing his hatred for Hindu Dharma to the ‘caste system practiced by Hindu community’. But now it appears that the hatred was because of his love for the religion he follows, as opposed to the religion on his caste certificate.
