A molestation bid on Hindu girl students has spiraled into communal violence leaving 4 people dead and several injured today in Paida village, Bijnore district, Western UP.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the violence broke out after Hindu girls on the way to school were harassed by Muslim youth. Angry family members of the girls confronted the offenders and soon firing and stone pelting broke out. Police forces have been rushed in from 10 districts, and UP ADGP (Law and Order) Daljeet Chaudhry is on the spot to control the situation which continues to be volatile. 6 people have been arrested for questioning.
4 Muslims from the village have died in the clash. A crowd has blocked the Najibabad road, and started targeting Hindu homes, burning one hut and bike. In front of the police force, they were heard chanting ‘khoon ka badla khoon se lengey” (we will avenge blood with blood)

However, reporter Sadiq Naqvi from CatchNews.com has reported that ‘a group of Muslim girls were harassed by a few youth from the Jat community, while they were on their way to school.’ Below is a screenshot of their report –
Catch News is owned by Rajasthan Patrika, a media house that runs a Hindi-language daily newspaper in 7 states. Interestingly, their Hindi language portal patrika.com has also reported the Hindu youth had harassed girls of the other community.
However local accounts & other media reports, apart from the Jagran report quoted above, such as Zee & AajTak say otherwise, that it was Hindu girls being harassed by Muslim youth which triggered the violence. Hindustan Times has reported that the girls were harassed by one Talib which set off a chain of events leading the exchange of fire and stone pelting between both communities.
While we await official confirmation in a volatile situtation, this would not be the first time when English news media has tried to distort facts when it comes to communal clashes. West UP has been a communal tinderbox for some time now, with the situation deteriorating rapidly under the current Samajwadi Party regime. Western UP districts like Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore, Shamli, Moradabad have seen repeated instances of rape and sexual harassment of Hindu women – with no action taken by UP administration to curb this disturbing trend, it was a matter of time before people resorted to illegal vigilantism in self-defense.
Women under attack in UP
Here are some of the disturbing and gruesome incidents of sexual violence that have gone under the radar of our Delhi-centric national media that prefers to obsess with cow vigilantism:
- 7 rapes, including the gangrape & subsequent suicide of 40 year old ASHA health worker Somavati, were reported in a 2 week period in February this year. Accused in 6 cases were Muslims.
- Molestation of a newly wed Hindu bride by 4 Muslims in Aligarh sparked fears of a Hindu exodus.
- Hindu Dalit girl attempts suicide bid in Moradabad after rape attempt by Muslim SP leader’s relative
- Minor girl gangraped & filmed by 5 Muslims in Moradabad, UP
- Rapes, molestation and sexual harassment of girls contributes to exodus of Hindus from Kairana, Shamli
Even the infamous 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots broke out when two Hindu boys who had gone to confront the Muslim youth harassing their school going sisters, shot dead one Muslim and were then both lynched to death by the Muslim mob. This storify compilation shows the series of crimes committed in an eight month period from Dec 2012 to Aug 2013, which culminated in the Muzaffarnagar riots.
Reacting to the CatchNews article, two Muslim handles on twitter, reacted as below –
@ShaikShafi who claims to be ‘Activist, Speaker, Writer, Fighting Hindutva Extremists attempts to infiltrate & take over India’ has over 12000 followers, including handles of Campus Front (PFI’s student group) etc.
@alamgirizvi twitter bio says “Kolkata, India. Electrical Engineer Working in U.A.E.” has over 18,000 followers including Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
We hope the situation in Bijnor calms down soon, and people allow the law of the land to take its course.
