Kerala Temple Auctions Sacred Bull Used for Rituals to Slaughterhouse

One of the bulls which carries the divine murti of the Parabrahma deity in Oachira Prabrahma temple has been sold to a slaughterhouse via auction, Malayalam daily janmabhumidaily.com has reported. This issue has caused lot of resentment among the devotees.

The bull which was used in various ritual of the temple was auctioned and sold for Rs 40000. There are some claims that the auction was held without the knowledge of the secretary or president of the temple’ ruling committee.

Oachira Parabrahma temple which is known as Dakshina Kashi or Kashi of Southern Bharat is a unique temple dedicated to Parabrahma murti or the supreme absolute self and cause of the universe. There is no specific temple complex for the deity here, but the deity is placed under a banyan tree.

Donation of bulls has been happening since ages in this temple, but the bulls which held the murti of the deity and were used in rituals were never auctioned, as they were considered sacred by the devotees.

The legend goes that once a devotee was deep in Upasana (worship) of Parabrahma, when his servant asked “What does Parabrahma look like?” The annoyed devotee said that Parabrahma looks like a Bull. Following this legend, bulls hold a special place in the Parabrahma temple.

This specific bull which was auctioned was recently treated by a doctor since it was ill, after that the bull suddenly disappeared. Even though the auction took place weeks back, some temple workers tried to hide the selling of the sacred bull.

This incident happened at a time when many devotees had been requesting the temple committee to build a Goshala to take care of the sacred bulls of the temple.

(We thank @Sarvadamana for translating the news to English)

The Oachira temple does not fall under any of the 4 Govt. controlled Devaswom boards in Kerala. Going by other reports, the temple management is doing great service to abandoned elderly and other poor & needy people in the area. So we hope that the temple committee comes clean on this matter, and whoever was responsible for auctioning the sacred bull is punished.

Another news shows how a temple bull can & should be honored through its natural life (this particular bull lived till grand old age of 22).
