Love Jihad not an illusion, it is making girls sex slaves: Kerala Church

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of Kerala has stated that Love Jihad in not an illusion and is endangering communal harmony and peace in Kerala.

According to a report in the Times of India, church officials plan to start a a sensitisation campaign against the issue through Sunday Schools. On Tuesday, the 28th Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church released a public statement saying that Keralite Christian girls are being targeted and killed in the name of ‘Love Jihad’.

“Many are even scared to use the term ‘Love Jihad’ but the Synod has now come out and said the exact words. There are reports of Christian girls getting converted and taken abroad. They are not living an ideal pious life either. They are made to live with more than one person and some are even pushed into becoming sex slaves,” said Syro-Malabar Media Commission secretary Fr. Antony Thalachelloor.

Thalachelloor said that the Church cannot overlook Christian girls being targeted and later murdered on the pretext of “love”. The Synod, in its statement on Tuesday, said that movements like Love Jihad getting stronger would endanger communal harmony and peace in Kerala. It pointed out that around half of the 21 youths recruited to ISIS from the state were Christians.

The Church also expressed dissatisfaction over police response in such cases.  But state police chief Loknath Behera said that they do not have any information on the matter. “If there is anything specific, the police will take necessary action,” he said.

This is not the first time a Christian organisation is raising the issue of Love Jihad, which affects non-Muslims girls in Kerala and the rest of the country. In September last year, National Minority Commission (NMC) Vice-Chairman George Kurian had written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighting the use of ‘love jihad’ by Muslim men to trap and convert Christian girls to Islam in Kerala, and then use them for terror activities.

In 2009, Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) had stated that more than 2600 young Christian women were converted to Islam since 2006. KCBC’s Vigilance Commission for Social Harmony had called Christians to be on guard against the phenomenon. “Love Jihad in Kerala is part of global Islamisation project” said Global Council of Indian Christians.

In the Akhila (Hadiya) conversion case, Supreme Court asked NIA to probe the issue of Love Jihad, and NIA after carrying out a probe informed the apex court “there is a pattern to convert Hindu girls and get them married to Muslim men” and that a “well-oiled machinery working in Kerala was indoctrinating and radicalising society in the state”.

One must credit the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, which despite being embroiled in several controversies of sexual abuse and land scam involving its senior clergy, has taken up cudgels on behalf of their followers on the serious issue of Love Jihad. Apart from RSS/BJP, no other Hindu body, at least no religious body or matha, has yet to take up this matter in a serious way.

Will left-liberals brush aside the concerns raised by Syro-Malabar Church with the same contempt that they reserve for Hindus who raise this topic?

  1. […] In the UK, US, and several Western countries there are stringent laws to deal with the menace of grooming. In Bharat, however, we simply brush off these concerns as “extreme reactions of the far-right”, “Hindutva extremism” and the like. And just like sexual grooming, love jihad is not a figment of imagination but a reality which even the Church in Kerala has admitted. […]
