Bangladesh: Two temples desecrated and looted in two days

In yet more attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh, a Radha Govinda mandir in Nawabganj was desecrated, the murtis burnt and gold ornaments looted on Sunday night, as per local media reports.

Shri Gopal Pal, the incharge of the temple, informed that on Monday morning the local devotees first noticed the broken murtis of Gour Nitai and the burnt murti of Radha Krishna.

The attackers also stole gold ornaments adorning the murtis. The temple authorities immediately informed the Nawabganj police station in Dhaka district.

“Similar incidents took place twice earlier as well,” Gopal Pal said.

Meanwhile, a Maa Shitala temple of the ancient Panchpoya Mahasamshan located in Jadavpur of Rangpur district was vandalized on Saturday night with the murti of Maa Shitala being beheaded.

ASP Zahirul Islam and Sirajul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Nawabganj police station, started investigation of the desecration of Radha Govinda mandir on Monday morning after on-site inspection. Police tried to downplay the hate crime.

“It is not a communal case. This kind of attack happened  earlier also. The main motive behind the burglary is gold ornaments,” said OC Sirajul Islam, who did not offer any comment on why thieves would burn and break the murtis if their intent was solely to steal.
