Hindu couple murdered by Pakistani in Dubai villa

A Gujarati Hindu couple has been brutally murdered and their teenage daughter wounded by a Pakistani national in a robbery bid in Dubai, UAE last week. The crime took place in an affluent villa residence in Dubai, Arabian Ranches, where the family lived. The Pakistani national has been nabbed by police and crime and valuables have been recovered from his possession.

The couple Hiren Adhiya & Vidhi Adhiya, were asleep in their bedroom when the accused entered their home to rob it. Their two daughters, aged 13 and 18, were also at home at the time. The burglar found Dh 2,000 (approx. Rs. 41,000) in a wallet on the ground floor and then went further in search of more valuables. Hiren woke upon hearing a noise and discovered the burglar. The accused, fearing arrest, stabbed him with a knife he had specially purchased for the crime.

On hearing Hiren’s shouts, wife Vidhi also woke up and met the same fate as her husband. The elder daughter also woke up to find her parents in a pool of blood and the burglar stabbed her as well. The criminal then managed to flee the crime scene. Both Hiren and Vidhi succumbed to stab injuries and died while the daughter survived with minor injuries on her neck.

The UAE police gathered forensic data from the crime scene and recovered the murder weapon 1 km from the house. The attacker’s fingerprints and DNA were used to track him down in another emirate. The Pakistani national had worked at the home of the Adhiyas as part of a maintenance team two years back and had noticed their rich lifestyle and large amount of money lying around.

Having decided to steal from the Adhiya home, he bought a knife and scaled the wall to enter the compound. The villa residents were in habit of keeping their garden/patio door open and this is where he entered the home from. Police, after arresting him, also recovered stolen jewellery from him.

Residents of Arabian Ranches, a gated community, were shaken as details of the attack emerged. In the quiet villa community, tenants and homeowners said they usually left doors leading to gardens and garages open.

Hiren Adhiya was a senior director at a Sharjah oil and gas contractor. The deceased couple is survived by two daughters aged 18 & 13. Consul General of Bharat has been helping the surviving daughters and they are in touch with their extended families in Bharat.

Condemning the incident, Ashok Kotecha, one of the directors of the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi, said: “On behalf of the Gujarati community, we are working with the Consulate-General of India in Dubai to ensure all needs of the family are met. This includes the repatriation of the mortal remains.”
