Pak army officer caught proselytizing UN mission employees in Congo

An army officer from Pakistan posted in the African nation of Congo serving on behalf of the United Nations (UN) was caught attempting to convert UN mission employees to Islam which is a minority religion in Congo. A large majority of the population in Congo follows various sects of Christianity and hence serious exception was taken to the proselytization attempt by the Pak officer.

Reports state that Colonel Saqib Mushtaqi, deputy commander of the Pakistani contingent that is posted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) as part of UN’s Organization Stabilization Mission has been accused of proselytizing. He allegedly approached some of the UN mission employees who were Christians asking them to take up Islam.

Although there is no information as yet regarding the kind of action that would be taken against the officer, it has come to light that the General Headquarters has taken the issue seriously and ordered an internal inquiry against the officer.

This is not the first time a Pakistani has been caught proselytizing. Earlier Pakistani cricketer Ahmed Shehzad had asked Sri Lankan player Tillakaratne Dilshan to embrace Islam. Shehzad was caught on camera saying “If you are a non-Muslim and you turn Muslim, no matter whatever you do in your life, straight to heaven” to Tillakaratne.

Islamic proselytization comes naturally to Pakistani cricketers. The trend was started by Saeed Anwar was concretized by Inzamam-ul-Haq. Hindu players like Danish Kaneria were sidelined because they refused to accept Islam. It is said that only those players who accepted Haq’s routine of offering Islamic prayers during training found favor with him when he was captaining the side.

Pakistan is gripped by Islamic extremism and hence the proselytizing mindset of either the army officer or the Pak cricketers should come as no surprise.
