Communal tension flared up in Saharanpur after some youths belonging to minority community teased the daughter of a local Bharatiya Janata Party leader and when the girl resisted, they snatched her gold chain and escaped.
Agitated with the incident, BJP’s former MLA Rajeev Gumbar and the family members of the victim along with locals reached Kotwali police station and laid a siege in protest.
The cops subsequently swung into action and claimed to have arrested two of the three accused.
According to SP (City) of Saharanpur, Prabal Pratap Singh, BJP leader Vinod’s daughter was returning home on Monday evening when three youths intercepted her. They tried to outrage her modesty and when the girl resisted, the youths snatched her gold chain and escaped from the spot.
Agitated with the incident, the former MLA and other leaders staged a protest outside the Kotwali police station after which a case was registered.
In his FIR, the BJP leader named three local youths, identified as Azam, Salman and Nonu. The police later raided the houses of the accused and arrested Salman and Nonu while the third was absconding.
Sources said that as the two parties belonged to different communities, communal tension flared up in the area. However, due to the presence of heavy police force, no untoward incident took place.
