Election Commission Stops Ramkatha in Surat citing ‘Model Code of Conduct’ for Gujarat Elections

The Election Commission has directed the organisers of Morari Bapu’s Ramkatha in Surat not to hold it on Saturday until the first phase polling of the Gujarat Assembly elections does not come to an end.

DNA newspaper is claiming this EC directive has come as a result of its earlier report on whether the “Ramkatha was being organised to change the discourse from agitation to patriotism.”

So, even a discourse centred on patriotism is now taboo for our secular-liberals? Is this why there was hardly any reaction by our top intellectuals when the Archbishop of Gandhinagar, Thoman Macwan, asked Christians to vote against “nationalist forces”? Is ‘patriotism/nationalism’ the new ‘communalism’?

DNA is playing the guilt-by-association game by saying that as the Ramkatha (discourse on Bhagwan Ram’s life) in Surat was organized by ‘pro-RSS’ Veer Maruti Jawan Trust of diamond merchants and builders to raise Rs 200 crore to honour and help Army martyrs’ families, it is equal to rooting for BJP in the upcoming polls. Other nudge-nudge allegations are that Morari Bapu, who is conducting the Ramkatha, is considered ‘close’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and that the Ramkatha is being organised in an area which has been the epicentre of the Patidar community’s reservation agitation.

Ramkatha

Now, unless Morari Bapu or the Ramkatha organizers have explicitly asked devotees to vote for a particular party or candidate, or praised any BJP/Gujarat Government schemes, since when did it become wrong to hold a religious/social event during polling? Even DNA acknowledges that candidates of all parties have kept away from the Ramkatha. And why is media so hell bent on encouraging divisive agitations that seek more sops from the State? Isn’t it good if a unifying, patriotic event is organized at a spot that has been torn asunder by a violent agitation?

Did it strike DNA and the rest of our left-liberals that December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day since 1949 to honour our men & women in uniform – so it is perfectly natural for any organization to honor Army martyr’s families at this time. Are our liberal-seculars admitting that BJP is the only political party which is patriotic, so any celebration of patriotism benefits it alone?

Is their argument also that any Hindu religious activity during and before elections should be banned as it ‘communalizes’ the atmosphere? Will they extend this argument to ban Friday namaz, Sunday mass during elections? Do they dare?

And where does this Hindu bashing end?

It’s an open secret as to how the ‘minority’ communities are beseeched/scared/directed to vote in their religious congregations…a process that is often cheered by our media, in the name of secularism.  Before the recent Goa elections, the Church had likened the NDA rule to Nazis and called for a BJP defeat. Fiery speeches by sundry imams and maulvis or leaders of Islamist organizations masquerading as social orgs, are the norm.

On the other hand, the diversity of Hindu Dharma and the de-centralized nature of its institutions means that Hindus just cannot be herded to vote enmasse. The percentage of independent-minded voters is far higher among Hindus than any other community.

Yet, through their blatant double standards and in-your-face minority appeasement, our liberal-seculars are only pushing Hindus into an ever tighter corner.
