A widow was humiliated and brutally attacked when she refused to remarry an elderly man who her in-laws had fixed for her. The victim, 28-year-old Guddi, a resident of Jagiron Ki Dhani was beaten up and her nose and tongue were cut with sharp weapons. Her arm was also broken by multiple assailants which included her in-laws and the older man who wanted to marry her forcibly.
According to a report in Patrika News, Baseer Khan, the brother of Guddi, informed the authorities that his sister was married to one Koje Khan six years earlier. Soon after marriage and birth of their son, Koje Khan died. Ever since, the girl was living with her parent’s family. Of late, one person who is much elder to Guddi wanted to marry her. He, along with Guddi’s in-laws were forcing Guddi to marry him but she did not agree to the match owing to his age. Enraged over the refusal, the accused man and in-laws came to Guddi’s home where they severely assaulted her and her family. They chopped off her nose and tongue and also broke her and her mother Bismillah’s arms who was trying to save her daughter’s life.
The victim is undergoing treatment at Mahatma Gandhi hospital at Jodhpur whereas main accused Janu Khan has been nabbed along with his brother Anwar Khan and nephew Nawab Khan. The other accused Iqbal Khan, Hasam Khan, Dule Khan, Faruk Khan etc are being traced by Sankda police.
In conservative Islamic societies where women are traded off like cattle to the highest bidder or influential people, the courage that Guddi displayed in defying the patriarchal mindset of her in-laws and society is commendable, but as is common in such societies, she will have to live with the scars of her ordeal for the rest of her life, both literally and figuratively.
